Windows Phone 7 devices in Canada are rare. After a 14-month absence, it’s only now we’re seeing a new wave of handsets (Nokia Lumia 710, plus the upcoming Lumia 800 and HTC Radar). So the enthusiasm is building and from reading over a report from PocketNow the next big OS update, codenamed “Apollo”, will be incredibly impressive. In a leaked video Microsoft SVP and Windows Phone manager Joe Belfiore showcased upcoming details of Windows Phone 8. Here’s a rundown of some of the key points:
Windows Phone 8 will see much needed changes, especially to compete with other manufacturers. Highlighted was support for multi-core processors, a total of 4 new unknown screen resolutions, microSD card storage and NFC support that will help built what Belfiore called the “Wallet experience”. The upgrade will also make it easier for developers to “reuse – by far – most of their code” when making their app available from a desktop, tablet or phone.
Other very notable info is the data management features. WP8 will automatically search/connect to available Wi-Fi hotspots; Zune desktop integration will be history and possibly be replaced with “richer version of ActiveSync”; there’ll be a greater Skydrive integration. Microsoft is aiming to have over 100,000 Windows Phone 7.5-compatible apps when WP8 is officially released (rumoured to be in Q4). In addition, you can expect to see some sort of deeper Skype integration, possibly built right into the OS, making Microsoft’s acquisition fully embedded into their mobile plans
My Take
The launch of Windows Phone 8 devices can really help boost Microsoft stake in the mobile phone industry. Right now Microsoft is behind in the industry but they are really beginning to pick up steam. With the “Mango” update that came October 2011 it help increase Microsoft share in the smartphone industry. This update can really help Microsoft a lot by making Windows phone be able to support multiple core. In a result of running a smartphone with multiple cores it can help developers make better software/apps for the phone, be able to run games on phone better, and increase performance of their phones. Currently, in my opinion I do not think they need to update the phone to quad cores dual core is fine enough because WP7 OS really runs smooth. Most of the WP7 devices that are single core run smoother than some dual core androids, but an upgrade in cores is needed for multitasking and gaming. Another thing really holding Microsoft Windows phone back is the lack of expandable memory. Microsoft windows phone turns off some users because the lack of memory it holds because Microsoft limits the memory a manufacture can make is 8GB and 16GB. Most people want phones that can hold more memory than that because these days’ apps can take up a lot of space, and the music and videos we put on our devices can fill up those spaces rather quick. I think it is important for Microsoft to implement skydrive into windows phone because it can help build a more fluent ecosystem. If Microsoft can create a seamless ecosystem with their devices like your PC, Xbox, Windows phone, etc it can make the ultimate platform for Microsoft users be able to carry work and task from devices to another. For example being able to use skydrive on the xbox like having your own personal space where you can upload files to other devices like uploading a movie or music on skydrive on your PC then being able to play it on your xbox or Windows Phone. In conclusion, this update is really crucial for Microsoft because they need to gain steam in the smartphone market because they are really behind, but if Microsoft can have a good 2012 it can help them gain momentum going into 2013 where they can maybe be a threat for other OS’ like Apple and Android OS. Microsoft is in a crucial position this year they need to make sure this upgrade is perfect and not lose people by fragmentation like how Android Os fragments their users. Microsoft is really in the position to overtake Apple in the smartphone business who is just staying steady in their position right now.
